THE IMPACT

this book was presented as part of a gallery.

People were able to experience an interactive, pop-up book designed for adults — enjoying the story of a couple’s first “I love you” exchange. Or more accurately, a couple’s one-sided “I love you” in exchange for… “thank you.”

HIGHLIGHT OF MY CONTRIBUTIONS

research

Preliminary research for the project focused on the cognitive psychology of memory.

interviewing

I created a safe environment for the two individuals to share their respective recollections of an emotionally-charged and vulnerable moment.

(The individuals were asked not to discuss this experience leading up to the interviews, and the interviews were conducted separately.)

editorial design & illustration

I mapped out key elements of each story, highlighting moments of consistency & contradiction, and denoted each perspective with different fonts on the same page so that readers could experience the merged perspective in one cohesive narration.

interactive design in the physical space

The interactive book was designed to engage readers, increasing interaction & play as the story escalated towards climax.

Fun was an important criterion in delivering a delicate message.

This project was a statement of fallible memories. Merging two perspectives side-by-side allowed readers to grapple with the malleability of our recollections, the impact of bias in our ability to recall (especially when emotions are high), and the importance of humility when claiming truth.
